Steelworkers Demand Higher Wages as Tariffs Boost Profits

U.S. Steel and ArcelorMittal workers are demanding a new contract that provides better pay and benefits as steel tariffs are fattening the coffers of their employers.

Thousands of United Steelworkers members plan to hold rallies across the U.S. Aug. 30, two days before their master contract expires.

Approximately 31,000 workers at U.S. Steel and the Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal are covered by the national pact. The United Steelworkers union has withheld direct threats of a work stoppage but told members through negotiation updates that proposals from the two companies are “an insult” and “unreasonable.”
