The way some companies staff up during the busy shopping season is changing thanks to a patchwork of local laws limiting how retail employers schedule workers and hire seasonal help.

These predictive scheduling laws are in place in Oregon and four cities—New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Emeryville, Calif.—with Chicago and Philadelphia considering legislation governing how employees fill extra shifts and how much control employees have over the hours they work, according to HR Dive.
