Software Engineer Sues Over Termination of F-1 Student Status

A California software engineer is challenging the Department of Homeland Security’s termination of his student visa status, saying it jeopardizes their ability to continue working in the US.

The plaintiff, who filed their complaint in the US District Court for the Northern District of California Monday under a pseudonym, obtained a graduate degree in 2023 and has been employed since then through the Optional Practical Training program. They’re one of hundreds of students who have had records terminated in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program maintained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, putting them out of status.
