Senate Panel Advances Julie Su as Labor Department Secretary

April 26, 2023, 2:13 PM UTC

The Senate’s labor panel voted to approve Julie Su’s nomination for US secretary of labor as businesses and Republicans mount pressure on moderate senators ahead of a full chamber vote.

The Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 11-10 Wednesday. Republicans grilled Su during testimony less than a week ago on her record as California’s labor secretary before joining the Biden administration as deputy labor secretary in 2021.

Su’s nomination still faces possible roadblocks. Moderate Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) haven’t said whether they support Su to lead the department.

A single defection in the Democratic caucus could tank her nomination, considering Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) unknown return to Washington.

Su’s record in the Golden State has also been a focal point of objections to her nomination. During her California tenure, she enforced a controversial law that tightened independent contractor regulation and dealt with billions in unemployment insurance fraud during the Covid-19 pandemic.
