Senate Advances Bill to Curb Arbitration in Age Discrimination

The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced legislation to invalidate mandatory arbitration agreements in instances where an employee alleges age discrimination in the workplace.

The Protecting Older Americans Act of 2023 (S.1979)—sponsored by Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)—moved out of committee in a 15-6 bipartisan vote.

All Democrats and Republican Sens. Graham, Josh Hawley (Mo.), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), and John Kennedy (La.) voted in favor of the legislation.
