SEIU Michigan Reviews Claims of ‘Financial Malpractice’

The Service Employees International Union placed a 10,700-member Michigan local under the control of emergency trustees in response to allegations of financial improprieties.

Mary Kay Henry, SEIU international president, placed SEIU Healthcare Michigan in trusteeship after a whistle-blower “reported potential financial malpractice.” A subsequent review revealed “abuse of the local union’s loan and paid time off/earned vacation policy,” she said in an SEIU statement.

The union acknowledged the change in control Feb. 23, following an inquiry by Bloomberg BNA. Three veteran union officials took control of the local on Feb. 14, the union said.
