SEIU, Machinists Jointly Launch Massachusetts Uber Drivers Union

Unions seeking to organize Massachusetts rideshare drivers claim thousands have signed union support cards, likely enough to satisfy the initial threshold required under a first-of-its-kind law designed to let them collectively bargain pay and working conditions with Uber and Lyft.

The announcement Wednesday comes a month after voters approved the state-supervised bargaining process, passing Ballot Question 3 with 54% of the vote. The 32BJ affiliate of SEIU and the International Association of Machinists, which were the primary backers of the ballot measure, said they’re teaming up to organize the App Drivers Union.
