SEIU Health Care Workers in Florida Approve Merger With East Coast Local

Members of a Service Employees International Union local that represents 16,000 health care workers in Florida have voted overwhelmingly to merge with the 350,000-member 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the huge East Coast local announced June 18.

A mail-ballot election counted June 15 showed members of SEIU Healthcare Florida voted 1,859 to 59 to merge with 1199 SEIU, which represents health care workers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., 1199 SEIU spokeswoman Leah Gonzalez told BNA June 21. The merger will become effective July 1.
