Nearly 500 graduate teaching assistants at Illinois State University will be represented in bargaining by Service Employees International Union Local 73 following an election certified Nov. 1.
The Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board certified a bargaining unit composed of all teaching assistants on the ISU campus in Normal, Ill. The board’s certification order, however, excluded research assistants, pre-professional assistants, and certain other graduate student employees of the university.
The certification order comes after an Oct. 18 representation election. The teaching assistants voted 160 to 36 in favor of joining Local 73.
