SCOTUS to Weigh if State Wage Laws Apply on Offshore Rigs

The U.S. Supreme Court will consider whether federal or state wage law applies on offshore drilling rigs, the court announced Jan. 11.

The case came to the high court from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. It ruled in February 2018 that California’s minimum wage and overtime laws apply to workers on a Parker Drilling Management Services Ltd. rig a few miles off the Santa Barbara coast.

Under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, the laws of the adjacent state apply as long as they’re “not inconsistent” with federal law. California’s wage laws, which are more worker-friendly ...
