Rep. Bobby Scott was selected by the House Democratic Caucus Jan. 4 to chair the Education and Labor Committee.

The House Jan. 3 passed a measure to rename the panel once known as the Education and the Workforce Committee.

The Virginia congressman was the panel’s ranking Democrat in the last Congress. He takes the helm of the committee as it’s expected to schedule a series of oversight hearings on the Labor Department and the National Labor Relations Board. The panel is also expected to push legislation that would increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $15.
