Allegations that employers unlawfully retaliated against workers who complained about discrimination once again made up the majority of charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in fiscal year 2019, following the same trend from the previous year.
More than 39,100 workers reported instances of alleged retaliation, comprising 53.8% of all charges filed with the agency in fiscal year 2019, according to data released Friday. The EEOC received 359 fewer retaliation charges than the previous fiscal year.
Overall charge numbers were also down at the agency, reaching 72,672 in 2019, a decline from 76,418 charges in 2018.
