A high-stakes labor pact between unions and freight rail companies may not survive a vote by the SMART-Transportation Division this month—potentially prompting a strike, according to a senior union official.
The tentative agreement in question, reached with the help of the Biden administration in September, will pass or fail on a razor-thin margin, SMART-TD Alternate National Legislative Director Jared Cassity told reporters Thursday. Cassity’s comments came after a policy meeting of the AFL-CIO Transportation Trades Department, where leaders of major unions met with Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and discussed goals for the coming year.
