Race Bias Case Over Outdoor Work Settles, Bypassing High Court

A settlement has been reached in a case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court over the working conditions of black offshore oil workers who say they were given outdoor assignments without water breaks, while their white counterparts worked inside with air conditioning.

The agreement followed calls by the U.S. Solicitor General for the high court to resolve a circuit split over the types of negative job actions that can trigger the anti-discrimination protections of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
