Push for Driverless Car Legalization Stalls in States Nationwide

Labor groups tied to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the AFL-CIO have leveraged concerns over job losses, road safety, and local control to block proposals this year in statehouses nationwide that would benefit autonomous vehicle developers.

Legislation to broaden the use of the technology has stalled this year in at least eight states, including New York, Virginia (S.B. 670), Oregon (H.B. 4085), and Maryland (H.B. 1295). Federal legislation has yet to clear Congress despite Trump administration support for the industry.
