Providence, R.I., agreed to pay $5.9 million to settle legal disputes with the city firefighters’ union regarding shift restructuring and overtime pay.
The settlement, announced by Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza Nov. 3, would pay that amount over two fiscal years to 312 members of Local 799 of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Of that sum, $2.8 million would settle ongoing arbitration and state court cases stemming from the city’s 2015 decision to eliminate one firefighter shift.
