Proposed Paid Leave Program Said to Reduce Employer Benefits

Employers likely would reduce workplace paid leave benefits if a proposed federal paid leave benefit that passed the U.S. House last week makes it to President Joe Biden’s desk, an independent congressional auditor said Tuesday.

The proposed new entitlement program is now part of House Democrats’ $1.75 trillion social spending and tax plan (H.R. 5376) that still must be approved in the Senate. The paid leave part of the package isn’t likely to survive Senate scrutiny because Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) is resistant to the new benefit, and Democrats need every vote in the evenly divided Senate.
