Prison Appeals Jury Awards in ICE Detainee $1-a-Day Pay Dispute

GEO Group Inc. will ask the Ninth Circuit to overturn jury verdicts that awarded $23.23 million total to immigrant detainees and the state of Washington in their challenges to the private prison operator’s policy of paying $1 a day for work performed in detention centers.

GEO asked Judge Robert J. Bryan to hold off on enforcing the judgments and “waive any bond requirement” until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit considers its impending appeals. The motion was entered Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.
