Trump administration plans to limit how long foreign journalists can remain in the US would chill press freedom and damage international news coverage of the country, media groups warned.
Department of Homeland Security proposed regulations would mandate that foreign media employed on I visas renew their lawful status every 240 days, or about eight months.
If finalized, that requirement would give DHS a more active role in reviewing journalists’ work in the US, potentially leading to retaliatory denials of extension of stay requests, said Gabe Rottman, vice president of policy for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
