Paving Company Ordered to Pay $954,000 For Firing Workers Over Safety Complaints

An asphalt paving company was ordered to pay $953,916 and reinstate three former employees who were fired after expressing concerns about being asked to work long shifts without the rest breaks required by law, the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Aug. 18.

Asphalt Specialists Inc. of Pontiac, Mich., violated the Surface Transportation Assistance Act when it fired a foreman and two truck drivers who raised safety concerns after being directed to violate Department of Transportation-mandated hours of service for commercial truck drivers, OSHA said Aug. 18.
