Paid Leave Laws Making PTO Banks a Compliance Pain

Employers are reevaluating their paid leave packages—and even turning away from the recently popular paid time-off banks—as states, cities, and counties mandate paid sick leave.

Ten states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, 31 cities, and two counties have laws that require employers to provide a certain amount of paid sick leave to workers. Employers that operate in multiple jurisdictions increasingly find themselves “having a tough time administratively giving workers leave and complying with the various laws,” Libby Henninger, a shareholder with Littler Mendelson in Washington, told Bloomberg Law June 28.
