The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration leveled new fines against a Georgia countertop maker over workplace silica exposure and a Florida target-missile manufacturer after a facility fire injured employees.
The agency under the US Department of Labor announced $33,000 in penalties on July 10 for Brazilian Stone Design LLC, in Powder Springs, Ga., which it said exposed workers to respirable crystalline silica.
The agency asserts that the stone countertop manufacturer exposed workers to high airborne concentrations of the substance, failed to require the use of respirators, and didn’t engage in the proper health monitoring and surveillance of the hazard. ...
