OPM Announces Data Breach Affecting Up to 4 Million Current, Former Employees

The Office of Personnel Management has identified a cybersecurity incident potentially affecting personnel data for up to 4 million current and former federal employees, the OPM said in a June 4 statement.

The OPM said the security breach includes personally identifiable information (PII), and that it’s sending notifications to those affected.

“Since the investigation is on-going, additional PII exposures may come to light; in that case, OPM will conduct additional notifications as necessary,” the OPM said.

According to the OPM, it first detected the cyber-intrusion affecting its information technology systems and data in April.
