Gov. Mike DeWine (R) of Ohio vetoed a bill passed by the state’s legislature that would have allowed 14- and 15-year-olds to work later hours during the school year with a parent’s permission.
The bill (SB 50) would have let teens younger than 16 work as late as 9pm, with parental approval, during the school year.
DeWine’s veto deviates from most red-state governors’ responses to state bills supporting expanded work for teens. Republican-run legislatures in several states have successfully increased the hours teens can work and in some cases, expanded the sorts of jobs they can perform.
