Obama Nominates Elena Kagan To Serve as Supreme Court Justice

President Obama May 10 nominated U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan to serve as the next justice of the Supreme Court, to succeed retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.

If confirmed by the Senate, Kagan would be the fourth woman ever appointed to the Supreme Court and would be the third sitting female justice. In announcing her nomination, Obama pointed to Kagan’s professional history as a law professor, the first female dean of Harvard Law School, and a public servant.
