The New York City Human Rights Law has been expanded to include caregiver status as a protected category in prohibitions against employment discrimination, under a city council bill signed Jan. 5 by Mayor Bill de Blasio (D).
The measure (Intro. No. 108-A, Local Law No. 2016/001), passed unanimously Dec. 16 by the overwhelmingly Democratic controlled council, provides that an employee or job candidate who is caring for a minor child or an individual with a disability cannot be terminated, demoted or denied a promotion because of the status or the perceived status as a caregiver.
