NYC Bills Limiting Firing of Fast-Food Workers Headed to Mayor

New York City would impose rare legal limits on fast-food employers’ ability to fire or lay off workers under legislation that’s headed to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s desk for his signature.

A pair of bills passed the New York City Council on Thursday to require fast-food restaurants to show “just cause” before firing employees and to prove legitimate economic reasons for layoffs or a reduction in hours.

Supporters of the bills said they’ll give important protections to hourly workers who face the threat of termination with no warning, including for complaining about health and safety problems during the pandemic.
