NY County Liable for Sheriff’s Office Workers’ Overtime Claims

A county in upstate New York failed to pay its workers for their overtime, a federal judge said, directing the parties to consider settling instead of going to trial on damages.

Saratoga County didn’t pay sheriff’s office workers for pre-shift tasks that pushed their hours into overtime territory, the US District Court for the Northern District of New York said. When the county did pay workers for pre-approved overtime, that pay was late and for the wrong amounts, according to the Monday opinion granting the plaintiffs summary judgment on Fair Labor Standards Act liability.
