A coalition of college football players, with assistance from the United Steelworkers, has formed a new labor organization and filed a representation petition with the National Labor Relations Board, the group announced Jan. 28.
During a news briefing in Chicago, the players announced the creation of the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA), which seeks to negotiate on behalf of scholarship athletes with colleges and universities, and with the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The union is intended to protect players from financial exploitation and potentially life-threatening injuries, the group said.
