NIOSH Issues Guides on Chemical Exposure to Skin

Guides to how exposures to 15 chemicals, such as nicotine and parathion, affect the skin are now available, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health announced in a Federal Register notice published Oct. 13 (80 Fed. Reg. 61,425).

The guides, called “skin notation profiles,” provide more detail than is available in NIOSH’s Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, the agency said. Each skin notation profile includes information on a chemical’s potential to cause localized damage such as irritated skin, immune-mediated responses such as allergic reactions, and system toxicity such as neurotoxicity.
