California state agencies will study AI’s effects on the workforce and recommend policies aimed at protecting and retraining displaced workers, potentially including severance pay and union contracts, under an executive order from Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).
The order, which Newsom’s office released Thursday, calls for a broad state government response to the possibility of widespread workforce displacement as businesses increasingly adopt artificial intelligence technologies.
“This moment demands that we reimagine the entire system—how we work, how we govern, how we prepare people for the future,” Newsom said in a written statement.
