New San Francisco Wage Ordinance Will Raise Fines, Increase Enforcement

SAN FRANCISCO—Employers in San Francisco will face higher fines for violating the city’s minimum wage requirements under an ordinance signed into law Sept. 16.

Mayor Edwin Lee at a ceremony signed the Wage Theft Prevention Ordinance, which amends the San Francisco minimum wage law to double fines for violations to $1,000. The law also allows investigators to immediately cite employers for violations, requires that claims be processed within a year, and permits the city’s office of labor standards enforcement to use funds that are uncollected by employees after three years.
