New Jersey Governor Signs Bills Targeting Worker Classification

New Jersey employers that misclassify their workers could be forced to halt operations and could face fines under a package of legislation Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed into law.

The governor signed six bills inspired by his worker classification task force, with an eye toward preventing employers from improperly treating workers as independent contractors—a status that exempts them from the protections of state wage laws as well as the right to unionize.
