New Jersey Expands Family-Leave Law in Response to Virus

New Jersey employers must give up to 12 weeks of unpaid family leave for employees affected by school closures or quarantine orders related to the Covid-19 pandemic, under legislation Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed into law.

The new law expands the state’s existing family leave program by requiring employers to grant job-protected leave for employees who are caring for sick or quarantined family members due to Covid-19 or caring for a child whose school is closed. Murphy announced signing the bill, S2374, late Tuesday, and it takes effect retroactively to March 25.
