MSHA Issues Final Rule Regarding Continuous Personal Dust Monitor

The Labor Department’s Mine Safety and Health Administration is set to release a final rule governing the use of continuous personal dust monitors in coal mines, according to a notice slated for publication in the April 6 Federal Register.

The rule establishes criteria for approving the continuous personal dust monitor. A CPDM, which is worn by the miner, contains a computer that continuously monitors the miner’s coal dust exposure level and a digital display that instantaneously shows the cumulative average dust concentration.
