Michigan Minimum Wage, Paid Sick Leave Increase After Ruling

The Michigan business community is facing a labor law upheaval after a ground-breaking ruling Tuesday reinstated measures that immediately increased the state’s minimum wage and guaranteed paid sick leave.

The Michigan Court of Claims’ decision invalidated the state Legislature’s 2018 “adopt and amend” maneuver. In that process, the GOP-controlled House and Senate adopted paid sick leave and minimum wage ballot measures, thus ensuring that the question wouldn’t get put to voters. They then watered down those measures with new laws (SB 1171 and SB 1175) in a lame-duck session that year.
