Michigan Governor Nixes Ban on Public Worker Vaccine Mandate

Michigan public employers and universities can continue requiring that workers and students receive Covid-19 vaccines after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Wednesday vetoed provisions in a larger bill that would have banned these requirements.

Whitmer signed a roughly $70 billion bipartisan state budget bill (S.B. 82) that her administration developed with Republican leaders in the state House and Senate. But she tossed language that would have blocked the governor or local government officials from requiring public employees to get vaccinated, and would have given students in public schools broad exemptions to the shots.
