Michigan Governor Calls for Expanded Overtime Coverage (1)

Michigan’s overtime pay requirements would be expanded to cover an additional 200,000 workers under a proposal Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Oct. 24.

The Democratic first-year governor described her proposal as a counter to the Trump administration’s rollback of an Obama-era regulation that would have increased the federal salary threshold above which workers are exempt from overtime pay . The Michigan plan would mirror moves by California, New York, Washington State, and others to set state thresholds higher than the federal requirement — in some cases done as part of broader minimum wage legislation.
