MetLife Inc. and two subsidiaries denied more than $50 million in overtime wages to a nationwide class of long-term disability insurance claims specialists, according to a complaint filed today in a Connecticut federal court (McKinney v. MetLife Inc., D. Conn., 17-00173, complaint filed 2/7/17).
The specialists alleged that their job duties, which include gathering and compiling claimant information and medical data, qualify them as nonexempt workers under the Fair Labor Standards Act. They further claimed that MetLife unlawfully reclassified them as overtime-exempt administrative employees to cut costs in 2014, with no corresponding change in their duties.
