Mayo Clinic Heart Surgeon’s Racial Bias Case Fails on Appeal

The Mayo Clinic prevailed on race, religion, and national origin discrimination claims brought by a cardiovascular surgeon who resigned after numerous complaints and an investigation revealed he had sexually harassed coworkers, under a ruling by the Eighth Circuit on Wednesday.

Sameh Mahmoud Mohamed Said, who is Black, an Egyptian national, and a practicing Muslim, worked in Mayo’s cardiovascular surgery department.

In 2017, two female anesthesiologists complained that Said made unwelcome romantic advances, and that they feared retaliation. Internal reviews revealed other complaints of unwelcome romantic advances from Said, and reports of him yelling and cursing on the job. In 2018 ...
