Massachusetts Law Lets Public Unions Charge Nonmembers Dues

Public-sector unions in Massachusetts can charge nonmembers for grievance services under a new law that pushes against a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision.

Senators passed H. 3854 with overwhelming support (39-1) Sept. 19 to handily override an August veto by Gov. Charlie Baker (R). The House also easily overrode the veto Sept. 18 by a vote of 154-1.

The new law brushes up against the Supreme Court’s decision in Janus v. AFSCME, which said public employees can’t be forced to pay dues or fees to a union to which they don’t belong.
