Marriott to Pay EEOC $175,000 to Resolve Religious Bias Claims

The Marriott Companies agreed to pay $175,000 and provide other relief to settle a religious discrimination lawsuit brought by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The EEOC’s lawsuit in Florida federal court alleged that Marriott Vacations Worldwide Corporation and Marriott Ownership Resorts illegally revoked a religious accommodation initially provided to a Seventh-Day Adventist employee that had allowed her to avoid Saturday shifts to observe the Sabbath.

The employee was forced her to choose between her work and her faith in an alleged violation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, leading to her resignation in June 2023.
