Maimonides Layoffs Prompt Health-Care Worker Protest

A union representing medical and patient care technicians at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn demonstrated outside the facility Nov. 30 in hopes of reversing the layoffs of roughly 200 workers.

The workers learned they would be terminated just before Thanksgiving, and their last day will be Dec. 15, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East said. The union got 30 days’ notice, as provided for in the contract.

A Maimonides spokeswoman blamed the staff cuts on “the reality of our industry’s economics: flat or declining government reimbursement rates coupled with rising costs.”
