Macy’s Will Pay $950,000 to Settle Charges After Death of California Warehouse Worker

Macy’s Corporate Services pleaded no contest Aug. 11 to a corporate criminal liability charge over the 2009 decapitation of a worker in East Los Angeles (People v. Macy’s Corporate Servs.plea entered).

The company will pay $950,000 during an Aug. 15, 2015, sentencing hearing as part of a negotiated settlement stemming from the death of Roy Polanco, according to a statement released by Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey Aug. 12.

The 65-year-old worker fell into an unguarded opening on a cardboard baling and compacting machine at a Macy’s distribution center, according to the statement.
