Macy’s to Pay $1.8 Million, Revise Criminal Checks to End Suit

Macy’s Inc. and two related companies agreed to pay $1.8 million and change their hiring policies to resolve a class suit alleging their overly broad criminal background checks screen out qualified minority job seekers based on race, New York federal court records show.

The policy changes Macy’s will make include revising its online job application to remove any criminal background check requirement for New York City applicants.

The companies will also retain an industrial organizational psychologist to review review the current criminal history screening and background check practices and bring them into compliance with Title VII, the NYCHRL, and New ...
