A Labor Department investigation of two brothers on probation for overtime and record-keeping violations at their Los Angeles area car washes has revealed new such offenses, the DOL alleged May 9.
The latest investigation shows that car washes owned by Benny and Nissan Pirian owe 96 employees $24,627 in back wages, the DOL said in a statement.
Five years ago, the Pirians became the poster boys for the Southern California car wash industry’s widespread exploitation of an overwhelmingly immigrant workforce; and in 2010, the two men received jail sentences and a $1 million fine for various violations 241 DLR A-12, 12/18/09, 158 DLR A-8, 8/17/10
