Labor Department Expands Protections for Apprentices

Registered apprenticeship programs will be prohibited from discriminating based on age (40 or older), genetic information, sexual orientation or disability under a final rule (RIN 1205–AB59) announced today by the Department of Labor.

The changes to the National Apprenticeship Act regulations supplement an existing ban on bias due to race, color, religion, national origin and sex in apprenticeship programs registered with the DOL and affiliated state agencies, the Employment and Training Administration said in a notice scheduled for publication Dec. 19 in the Federal Register. The final rule will take effect Jan. 18.
