Labor Board Revives Philadelphia Guard Union’s Organizing Effort

The labor law prohibition on unions representing both guards and other types of workers at the same organization doesn’t prevent the Philadelphia Security Officers Union from representing guards at a security services contractor, the National Labor Relations Board ruled.

The NLRB on Wednesday reversed a regional director’s decision that had disqualified the PSOU from representing Universal Protection Service LLC guards because the company provides services to the University of Pennsylvania, and the union represents nonguard traffic control aides at that school.
