Catholic fraternal organization Knights of Columbus is accused of misclassifying hundreds of its insurance agents as independent contractors to avoid repaying business expenses in violation of California law.
The Knights presented David Duran with a “take it or leave it” field agent contract to sell permanent and term life insurance in a particular territory, he alleges in his complaint. He seeks to represent a class of similarly-situated field agents who believe they should be considered Knights employees rather than independent contractors.
The lawsuit was transferred to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California Dec. 26.
