Jury Says AT&T Sales Director’s Layoff at Age 49 Was Bias

AT&T Mobility Services LLC violated age discrimination law when it included the 49-year-old director of sales operations of its southeast Pennsylvania territory in a workforce reduction, a federal jury in Philadelphia decided.

The company also knew or showed reckless disregard for whether Alison Ray’s selection for inclusion in the reduction in force or “surplus,” and her resulting discharge, was barred by law, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania said in a verdict slip entered Monday. The verdict, which determined liability only, was reached following a six-day trial before Magistrate Judge Timothy R. Rice.
